Tips by age

6-8mo

Offer one firm rusk for your baby to hold and gnaw on while sitting upright. It is meant to soothe gums, not to be eaten in bites. Stay close the whole time.

Choking safety: A rusk can soften and break into a lump as it is chewed. Always supervise, sit baby upright, and take it away if a piece breaks off.

9-11mo

Hand over one rusk for gnawing practice. Let baby explore it slowly and remove it once it gets very soggy or starts to crumble.

Choking safety: Watch for softened chunks breaking away. Supervise closely and keep baby seated upright while gnawing.

12-18mo

Serve as a teething or snack rusk that toddlers can hold and chew. Swap in a softer bread if your child finds it too hard.

Choking safety: Keep your child seated and supervised, and clear away any large softened pieces that break off.

18-24mo

Serve as a crunchy snack rusk. Your child can hold and bite it themselves, with you nearby for the first few bites.

Choking safety: Stay nearby and make sure your child stays seated while eating the firm rusk.
