Ingredients

  • 2 medium celery, washed, cut into finger-length pieces
  • 60 ml peanut butter, smooth4.06 tbsp peanut butter, smooth
  • 8 each pretzel

Steps

  1. Wash the celery and cut each stick into pieces about 8 cm long, then slice a thin sliver off the rounded side so each piece sits flat.
  2. Spoon smooth peanut butter into the hollow of each celery piece. If the peanut butter is runny, chill it for 30 minutes first so it holds.
  3. Press two pretzels into the peanut butter on each piece to make the butterfly wings, then serve right away.

Tips by age

12-18mo

Steam the celery until very soft, then mash or finely chop it. Spread a thin layer of smooth peanut butter and leave off the pretzels. Offer peanut butter thinned with a little water or yogurt so it is not sticky.

Choking safety: Raw celery, hard pretzels, and thick peanut butter are all choking hazards at this age. Cook the celery soft, skip the pretzels, and thin the peanut butter.

18-24mo

Steam the celery soft and cut into small pieces, then spread with a thin layer of smooth peanut butter. Skip the pretzels or crush them into fine crumbs.

Choking safety: Raw celery and whole pretzels are choking hazards under 4. Serve celery cooked soft and thin the peanut butter.

2-3y

Steam the celery until tender, cut into small bite-size pieces, and spread with a thin layer of smooth peanut butter. Crush the pretzels into small pieces if used.

Choking safety: Raw celery and whole pretzels remain choking hazards under 4. Keep celery soft and pretzels broken small.

3-5y

Around age 4 you can offer the butterfly as written once your child chews well. Cut celery into short pieces and watch closely while they eat.

Choking safety: Crisp raw celery and hard pretzels can be choking hazards near the younger end of this range. Supervise and cut into manageable pieces.
