Steps
Assemble
- Preheat the oven to 375F (190C) so it is hot and ready when the bake goes in.
- In a large casserole dish, combine the orzo, diced chicken, and sliced red onion.
- Whisk the broth, garlic, oregano, smoked paprika, and lemon juice in a bowl, then pour it over the orzo and stir gently.
- Scatter the bell pepper strips over the top without mixing them in, so they roast lightly instead of going soft.
Bake
- Cover the dish tightly and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the orzo is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
- Take the dish out, stir well, then mix in the tzatziki and diced zucchini until everything is coated.
- Return the dish to the oven uncovered and bake for 10 more minutes, until the zucchini is tender and creamy.
Finish
- Scatter fresh parsley over the top and add a squeeze of lemon juice just before serving warm.
- (Optional) For over-1s and adults, add a pinch of salt to taste, plus extra tzatziki, feta, or olives if you like.

Tips by age
Set aside a portion before adding salt. Finely chop or shred the chicken and mash the orzo and soft vegetables so they are easy to scoop and gum.
Choking safety: Chop chicken into small, soft pieces and avoid any firm chunks of pepper; skip olives at this age.
Serve a salt-free portion with the chicken cut into small bite-size pieces and the vegetables diced small. Use low-sodium broth and a little tzatziki.
Choking safety: Cut chicken and pepper into small soft pieces; do not add whole olives.
Serve as written from the salt-free portion, with the chicken cut into bite-size pieces. The tzatziki and broth are already naturally salty, so go easy on extra.
Choking safety: Cut any whole olives in half lengthwise if you offer them.
Serve as written in a child-size portion. They can have a little parsley and lemon on top, and feta or olives stirred in if they enjoy them.
Choking safety: Quarter or chop olives before serving if you add them.
