Tips by age

12-18mo

Use low-sodium pizza sauce and a small amount of cheese, since cheese and sauce are naturally salty. Cut the cooled quesadilla into thin finger-length strips that are easy to chew and grip.

Choking safety: Let the melted cheese and toppings cool fully and avoid large or stringy chunks, which can be hard to manage. Keep toppings soft and finely chopped.

18-24mo

Serve in thin strips or small wedges. Keep sauce and cheese amounts modest to limit sodium for this age.

Choking safety: Make sure toppings are soft and chopped small, and let the quesadilla cool so hot cheese does not burn or string.

2-3y

Serve as written, cut into bite-size wedges or strips. Offer a few soft veggie toppings on the side for picky eaters.

Choking safety: Keep any firmer toppings soft and finely chopped, and let it cool before serving.

3-5y

Serve as written in wedges. Let your child help choose and spread the toppings. For older kids who like a little salt, add a pinch at the table.
