Tips by age

6-8mo

Serve the smooth dip spread thinly onto a pre-loaded spoon, or thin it with a little water so it is easy to swallow. Choose a low-sodium hummus for the youngest eaters.

Choking safety: Keep the dip fully smooth with no chunks, and offer only soft, finger-size dippers, never raw hard vegetables.

9-11mo

Offer the dip on a spoon or spread onto soft bread strips. Steam any vegetable dippers until very soft and cut into finger-length pieces for self-feeding.

Choking safety: Steam carrot and broccoli until soft enough to squash easily; avoid raw or firm vegetable sticks.

12-18mo

Serve as written with soft pita wedges and steamed vegetable sticks. Pre-load a little dip onto each piece to help your toddler scoop it up.

Choking safety: Keep carrots steamed soft and cut lengthwise into sticks; raw carrot is a choking hazard at this age.

18-24mo

Serve as written. Let your toddler dip soft pita and steamed vegetable sticks themselves, offering a spoon for the dip too.

Choking safety: Continue steaming firm vegetables soft and cutting them into manageable sticks rather than rounds.

2-3y

Serve as written with a mix of soft bread and steamed or lightly cooked vegetables cut into easy-to-grip pieces.

Choking safety: Cut any raw vegetables into thin sticks rather than coins, and keep an eye on firm pieces.

3-5y

Serve as written as a snack or sandwich spread. A wider variety of crunchy dippers like cucumber or bell pepper strips works well now.
