Broccoli and Apple Puree

A naturally sweet puree of steamed broccoli and apple with a little olive oil, a gentle way to help babies enjoy green vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 480 ml broccoli, cut into florets2.03 cup broccoli, cut into florets
  • 1 medium apple, peeled and cored
  • 15 ml olive oil1.01 tbsp olive oil

Steps

  1. Bring 2 inches of water to a boil in a medium saucepan fitted with a steamer basket.
  2. Peel and core the apple, then cut it into rough chunks for even steaming.
  3. Add the broccoli and apple to the steamer basket, cover, and steam for 8 to 10 minutes until both are very tender.
  4. Reserve the steaming water, then transfer the broccoli and apple to a blender.
  5. Drizzle the olive oil over the broccoli and apple in the blender.
  6. Puree on high for 1 to 2 minutes until smooth, adding reserved water or breast milk a little at a time to reach the texture you want.

Tips by age

6-8mo

Blend completely smooth and thin with extra reserved water, breast milk, or formula to an easily spoonable consistency.

Choking safety: Make sure the puree is fully smooth with no firm broccoli stalk pieces remaining.

9-11mo

Blend a little less so the puree has a soft, slightly textured feel to encourage tongue and gum practice.

Choking safety: Ensure broccoli and apple are fully softened with no hard lumps.

12-18mo

Serve as a thick mash, or steam extra broccoli florets and apple a little firmer and cut into soft finger-size pieces alongside.

Choking safety: Cut any whole florets or apple pieces small and soft; avoid firm raw apple.
